Statement

My theories as a painter draw inspiration from my career as a professor and filmmaker, principles of cinematic montage--the collision of ideas: two or more fragments of nature juxtaposed in a frame of reference generate an intellectual thought--a third idea in the viewer's mind. Fragmented elements in my paintings show the dynamic relationships between the binary life vs. the full fidelity of freedom expected in a democratic society. The centerpiece of each work of art is binary (black & white) vs. the full visual fidelity (color) of life around us.

The first contact with art is a pedagogical window, an opportunity to encourage viewers to see the world from a new perspective. The art experience is a singular moment, the intersection between the image and the viewer, to challenge the viewer to deconstruct the world. In the pedagogical moment, the viewer derives a synthesis from the art, which can reconstruct 'good' and permanent change in the view. Change is the responsibility of art: not to maintain the status quo. The creation of art for any other reason is a waste of talent.
